The Election Commission (EC) made public the preliminary list of polling locations and booths for the 12th National Election yesterday. There are 5.36% more polling sites and 26.17% more voting locations on the draft list than there were in the results of the most recent general election.
“By August 31, anyone with questions regarding the preliminary list of polling locations should let me know. They will be settled by September 11th. Election Commission Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath stated that the draft list must be finalized by the field-level committee by 17 September and sent to the EC Secretariat by 24 September in accordance with the rules after a field-level EC committee released them on Wednesday (16 August).
The draft list calls for 42,338 voting places and 2,61,579 polling places for the forthcoming election, up 2,155 and 54,260, respectively, from the last national election. In the last election, there were a total of 40,183 polling places and 2,07,319 voting booths.
According to the Election Commission, the rise in voters is the reason for the increase of polling places and booths. There will be around 11.91 crore voters in the 2019 legislative elections. On the other hand, there were around 10.43 crore voters nationwide in the country’s 11. parliamentary elections.
The draft list divides the entire nation into 10 zones for the purpose of placing voting places.
Among these 10 regions, the number of centres increased most in the Cumilla region. The designated number of centres in the region increased by 10% to 4,700 centres.
